This is true because in 1872, on this day, Luther Childs Crowell was granted a patent for his "improvement" on paper bags. However, 13 years prior to Crowell's patent for improving paper bags, a man named William Goodale had been granted a patent for creating paper bags. And a paper bag-making machine was patented in 1870 by an even more confident Margaret Knight.

 

The platform The Paper Bag, an alliance of the leading KraftTM paper makers and producers in Europe, also sponsors "European Paper Bag Day," which was first observed in 2018. This day, which comes on October 18, aims to increase consumer awareness of paper carriers bags as a sustainable packaging option.

Both "Paper Bag Days" are notable because they seek to discourage the use of plastic bags and raise awareness of the harm that they systematically do to the environment. Paper bags are still the best commonly available alternative to plastic, even though they are now more expensive for everyday customers. Plastic is dangerous because it takes thousands of years to dissolve, whereas paper bags decompose naturally (biodegradable).

 

The winners will go down in history, but the losers will also have their day in the spotlight. Although Luther Childs Crowell received a patent for a "improvement" in paper bags on this day in 1872, he actually invented the "flat-bottomed" paper bag, not the widely acknowledged and acknowledged creator of the paper bag.

 

For unexplained and known (sic) patriarchal reasons, Crowell, not Margaret Knight, is the name that is most closely associated with this invention. Knight also had to defend her patent against offenders who had applied for the same invention before her and had stolen the concepts for her prototype. Knight sued Charles Anan for patent infringement, and after a number of witness depositions and the presentation of her original schematics and plans, Knight was successful and was awarded the patent.

 

While both Margaret Knight and Luther Childs Crowell were prolific inventors, the invention of flat-bottomed paper bags is credited to Crowell; nonetheless, we shouldn't forget that Knight had already developed the concept before Crowell did.
